How to increase your SMU email limit to 6 Gb and counting…

Well not directly but the end result will seem that way and it only takes a couple of minutes.

There are 2 uses of doing this.

One is to totally transfer all mail you get from your smu email including future mail and deleting that mail on your smu account. All your mail from now on would appear on that gmail account only.

Second is to use gmail as your 6 Gb archive storage. Your smu email will function as per normal but an extra copy of your email will be stored in the gmail server, even if you had deleted that mail. Your email will be somewhat unlimited as even if you delete mail from your smu email account you can still restore it in the gmail account. This option is recommend if you are not familiar with gmail or just want to test this option out risk free.

Step 1
Create a new gmail account, even if you already have one. This is so that your personal mails wouldn't get mixed with your school mail. If you don't mind mixing everything up then use your existing gmail account.

Step 2
Go to settings, then account, then look down under "Get mail from other accounts:" add a new email account.

Step 3
Input your smu email address and use the following settings, which are default.
WARNING

not checking the leave a copy of retrieved message on the server will result in gmail taking mail from your smu account and deleting that mail on your smu account. All your mail from now on would appear on that gmail account only. If you are planning to use this to archive mail only please check this option.

DONE!
It is recommended to have a desktop email client, whether apple mail, outlook or whatever to send mail as you cant send using your smu address without using their smtp servers, you can use the web outlook but it is slow. The only hassle is that when you change your password you would need to update the password in your email account.
