I got my hands on beta 2 of Office 2011 for Mac OSX and here are my findings!
1. Excel with VBA support
MS has promised VBA support for the new version of office for mac. So far it seems to work (NOT), i have opened a few spreadsheets from my CAT days and only some seem to work. On opening my CAT project, excel crashes instantly and is not able to open the file at all. My project does use around 20+ VBA functions and is 1.2mb. More testing needs to be done on the stability of excel when handling more complex files and I hope that it achieves almost 100% compatibility with what the windows version.
A good point to note is that the navigation of the application is much similar to its windows version, this means less confusion when listening to the prof teach on windows excel. Plus point!
Out of 10 XLSM (macro embedded excel files)
2 Opened with some compatibility problems
Verdict : ALOT MORE WORK TO GO, But the direction is correct.
2. Outlook for Mac
Outlook for mac is here to replace entourage. For now i do not know if this is a good thing, sure it looks nicer and stuff, whether it will be able to sync calendars and share them is another thing. Unfortunately, after applying settings that normally work with entourage 2008, outlook for mac doesn’t seem to be able to receive mail from the SMU exchange server, so i cant really comment on much. I would think that a beta 2 should be able to send/recieve email.
Verdict : Prettier but i see no great potential
